Questions

What size hat should I order?

Measure around your head with a soft tape, one centimetre above the ears and across the middle of the forehead, keeping it level. Take the reading over the hair you plan to wear, since a chignon can add a centimetre. 54 to 55cm is small, 56 to 57cm is medium and 58 to 59cm is large. Between two sizes, take the larger.

What is the difference between a hat, a headpiece and a fascinator?

A hat has a crown that sits on the head, with or without a brim. A headpiece is built on a band, a comb or a wire and gives height without a brim. A fascinator is a small decorative piece on a clip or a band with no solid base, which is why some dress codes exclude it.

Where are these hats made?

Every piece is designed and made by hand in the London atelier by Monika Perlińska, who has spent around thirty-five years at the bench, five of them in Philip Treacy's atelier and seven as head milliner at Jane Taylor. Each piece is blocked to the wearer's head measurement rather than made to a standard size.

Can I wear one of these to Royal Ascot?

The Royal Enclosure asks for a hat, or a headpiece with a solid base of at least 10cm across, and fascinators are not accepted there. Other enclosures are less strict. Check the base measurement on the listing and tell the atelier where you are sitting when you order. Monika will confirm the piece measures up before it is sent.
